For the past 20 years I have been obsessively tracking the designs, SEO performance and retention of all of the main legal SEO companies. You can view this by clicking on the Legal Website Companies link at the top right of this BLOG. On that page, you can then navigate to a particular web agency, where I will list out all of that agencies’ clients in my database. *Now most of those links are password protected. I do this because I don’t want salespeople to use that list to target the client’s of a particular agency. Therefore, if you are an attorney and you want to see ALL of the sites from a particular agency you can contact me at 480-889-4216 and I can send you a temporary password. This is valuable since most salespeople are only showing you their showcase clients!
How Do You Know Who Does a Firm’s Website/SEO?
For many sites this is easy, as the web agency will often mark their client sites with their logo and a link back to the Agency’s site. Sometimes the logo is searchable, meaning I can do a search in Google and find all of that agencies clients. So for example I can search “By FindLaw” “, MO” “injury Lawyer” and that will give me all of the FindLaw sites that market personal injury in Missouri.
Sometimes, like in the case of Scorpion, the site is marked with a link that is not searchable. In this case I can do a referral domain report for Scorpion.co in hRefs to see all the sites linking back to Scorpion. In this way I can also see who left Scorpion by looking at a “lost” link report.
But what if the site is not marked at all? Many SEO firms will not mark or only occasionally mark their sites. In these instances I can often figure it out by the design alone. Many companies, use the same fonts and design elements over and over. In other instances I can look at the code and figure out who built the site or who is doing SEO. Finally, I can often figure out the SEO company by the law firm’s link profile. In many cases, SEO firms use the same links over and over, with many relying on a proprietary link network.
How Do I Track Retention
For many years I would track every new personal injury site that was launched. In subsequent years, I would go back and see how many were still with that company. If they left that website company, I would mark that site with an x and if the site was down I would mark it with an xx. I have this info for 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023
Why do I do this?
Salespeople are great at showing you their showcase clients. In many cases the result is a massive outlier. For example, currently there is an Atlanta Personal Injury Lawyer who is ranking in the maps for both injury and accident terms. This result was due to the work of their prior SEO company (one of the top 5 SEO companies) However, the new company, one of the worst performing companies in my database, is taking credit for that result and likely selling lots of new clients because of it. This is the problem of relying on showcase clients or a few good SEO results. Most lawyers simply don’t have the time to adequately research SEO companies. I have spent well over 10,000 hours doing just that. My hope is that attorneys who are interested in making the best decision for their firm, use the information in this BLOG.
Of course I also do this to be the most prepared and knowledgeable SEO consultant in the industry. If you schedule a call with me, the first thing I will do is perform a point in time ranking analysis of your market You can be sure that you will be talking to an SEO expert who has an intimate understanding of your market and your competition.
