A lot of people ask me about the efficacy of focused websites. The short answer is that they work great. A focused website on a narrow practice area, if built correctly, can absolutely provide a great search and user experience. And if you provide a wonderful search and user experience, Google will usually reward you with great organic rankings. Besides rankings, a focused site is usually much better for conversion as well. Put yourself in the shoes of a searcher. Say you are looking for information on filing a dog bite lawsuit in Arizona and you come across a website that is completely focused on the topic like this dog bite website. Or lets say you were considering hiring an attorney for a serious truck accident case in Georgia. Hundreds of large personal injury firms have pages on Truck accidents, but not surprisingly, the top two results for GA truck Accident Lawyer are two focused truck accident websites – Butler Wooten Peak and Ken Shigley (Met him at AAJ – super nice guy).
7 years ago focused sites were much popular than they are today. Most companies rarely do them anymore. My theory on this is that the reduction in focus sites correlated with the rise in “authority score” – which is the metric popularized by SEOmoz that attempts to reverse engineer the Google algorithm. Authority score highly values the age of a site and incoming link authority of a website. Thus many web site companies consolidated their focused sites into one main site in order to increase its “authority score”. In a World that highly valued authoritative links, it was also much harder to manage multiple sites and attract good links to all of those sites.
My company does not follow the herd in this regard. We have always understood the power of focused sites, both in terms of rankings and SEO. Where it makes sense, a focused site that highlights an important practice area can be an important part of your web strategy. Here are a handful that we have developed over the years:
Jeep Fire
AZ Burn Injury
Hernia Mesh Lawsuits
Uber Sexual Assault
Aviation Accidents
